University Park is getting a new version of University Park Elementary School next year. The demolition of existing school began in August 2017, nearly 90 years after it greeted its first students.

The school, which opened in 1928, will be the first of three elementary schools in Highland Park ISD to be rebuilt within the next three years. Bradfield Elementary and Hyer Elementary will also be demolished and rebuilt.

The HPISD district has grown in the past 25 years from 4,000 students to 7,000 students.

University Park Elementary's approximately 650 students will attend the district's fifth elementary school starting in August 2017 while their school is rebuilt. The fifth elementary school was built during the 2016-2017 school year, and is HPISD's newest elementary school in 70 years.

The new University Park Elementary will open for the 2018-2019 school year. Students from Hyer will then move into the fifth elementary. They will remain there for two years as both their school and Bradfield Elementary are rebuilt.

The construction projects are all part of a $361.4 million bond passed in 2015, the largest in HPISD's 103-year history. The bond will also make renovations to Armstrong Elementary and make technology upgrades and renovations at the district's middle, intermediate and high schools.

In addition to the new and refurbished schools, Highlander Stadium will be renovated and a new multi-sport facility will be built in place of the Seay Tennis Center within two years as part of the bond package.
